CLASS 19 - FORMAL AND INFORMAL REGISTERS

During our ninteenth class we started exploring a new subject: levels of formality.
Durante nossa décima-nona aula, nós começamos a explorar um novo tema: níveis de formalidade.

We divided the class in groups with different examples of formality level variation: four or three texts, with the same content/objective, but written in different ways from the most informal to the most formal registers.

Nós dividimos a sala em grupos com diferentes exemplos de variação de nível de formalidade: três ou quatro textos, com o mesmo conteúdo/objetivo, mas escritos de formas diferentes do registro mais informal ao mais formal.

The groups talked about their impressions and highlighted that, in order to recognize what is more formal, we have:
Os grupos falaram sobre suas impressões e destacaram que, para reconhecer o que é mais forma, temos que:
- to check vocabulary, use of slangs, salutation.
(checar o vocabulário, uso de gírias e saudações - MR., por exemplo)
- to check if the person talks/writes as if he/she knew the addresse.
(checar se a pessoa fala/escreve como se conhecesse a pessoa a quem se dirige).
- to understand the situation in which the person is involved.
(entender a situação em que a pessoa está envolvida).

We have seen language can have different registers:
Vimos que a linguagem pode ter diferentes registros:


Frozen (congelado) - Sentences that never change/ Frases que nunca mudam.
Example: "Black and white" and not (usually) "white and black".
Formal Example: "This assignment is not acceptable in its present format."
"Este trabalho não está aceitável em seu presente formato".
Consultative Example: "I can't accept the assignment the way it is."
"Eu não posso aceitar este trabalho do jeito que está".
Casual Example: "This work is a no-go. Can't take it."
"Este trabalho não rola. Não posso aceitar".
Intimate Private language shared between two individuals, such as lovers or twins/ Linguagem íntima utilizada entre dois indivíduos, tais como amantes ou gêmeos.

We have, then started studying Internet acronyms, which influence language a lot.
Nós começamos, então, a estudar as abreviações que se usam na Internet, que influenciam muito a linguagem.
